Content warning: anarchism in media, query

Prompted the other day by yet another politician blathering on using "anarchy" meaning violent chaos - what examples can you think of in popular media (eg Netflix, Hulu, BBC, etc) where the topic of anarchy has been raised in some substantially accurate sense?

I wish I'd taken a screenshot - earlier today, the Indie's site had two columnists' reactions to the Bristol shindig."The Bristol riot was a gift to Priti Patel""The 'Kill the Bill' protest was shocking - but necessary"Can you guess which of the writers is a white guy, and which is a Black woman?

Insightful report from the Global Philanthropy Project on just where "anti-gender movement" funding comes from, and where it's directed:https://globalphilanthropyproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Meet-the-Moment-2020-English.pdf [https://globalphilanthropyproject.o.../2021/02/Meet-the-Moment-2020-English.pdf]One of the major players is the Christian Broadcasting Network: "From 2008 to 2017, CBN distributed more than $986 million in financial support overseas", with others including Focus on the Family ($14.3m), and Human Life International ($10.3m), the aggregate from all going to South America ($248m), Africa ($238m), Europe ($174m), Russia ($70m), and Asia ($259m).In Europe, "reporting has revealed that organizations associated with the European anti-gender movement receive funding through sources including religious institutions, wealthy aristo- cratic families, and Russian oligarchs", including Konstantin Malofeev and Vladimir Yakunin. The takeaway? They've got *loads* to spend, and are doing so at about 3x the progressives.

Content warning: trans, ukpol, conversion therapy, +?

ITV's Robert Peston obtained this from Liz Truss earlier today:==Peston: "Just to be clear - you would now wish to reassure the transgender community that when you bring forward your proposal, it won't be restricted to simply people of sexual orientation (sic), they will also apply to the trans community?"Truss: "I'm very clear that we want to make sure that transgender people are free to live their lives and don't face the kind of horrific conversion therapy that currently has been going on here in the UK."==There's still wiggle room, with the omnipresent fear they'll pull a not-so-sly move and either leave enough latitude for such abuse to continue, or slip in something to make the situation for HRT for under-18s worse still, but, prima facie, this does sound positive.https://nitter.eu/itvpeston/status/1374811437080645633 [https://nitter.eu/itvpeston/status/1374811437080645633]

@porsupah [https://lgbt.io/@porsupah] except with this lot, i wouldn't be surprised at all to discover that HRT & gender affirmation surgery ends up classified as "conversion therapy" - which is how every TERF currently replying seems to want it interpreteduntil Truss explicitly says otherwise, i just can't get excited

Content warning: fascism, book, Duke University, free

"'Visualizing Fascism' argues that fascism was not merely a domestic menace in a few European nations, but arose as a genuinely global phenomenon in the early twentieth century. Contributors use visual materials to explore fascism's populist appeal in settings around the world, including China, Japan, South Africa, Slovakia, and Spain. This visual strategy allows readers to see the transnational rise of the right as it fed off the agitated energies of modernity and mobilized shared political and aesthetic tropes. This volume also considers the postwar aftermath as antifascist art forms were depoliticized and repurposed in the West. More commonly, analyses of fascism focus on Italy and Germany alone and on institutions like fascist parties, but that approach truncates our understanding of the way fascism was indebted to colonialism and internationalism with all their attendant grievances and aspirations. Using photography, graphic arts, architecture, monuments, and film—rather than written documents alone—produces a portable concept of fascism, useful for grappling with the upsurge of the global right a century ago—and today."https://read.dukeupress.edu/books/book/2681/Visualizing-FascismThe-Twentieth-Century-Rise-of [https://read.dukeupress.edu/books/book/2681/Visualizing-FascismThe-Twentieth-Century-Rise-of]
